What is an activation event?
An activation event is the specific, measurable action a team designates as the moment a new user reached first value — created a first project, sent a first invoice, connected a data source. It is the finish line that turns "activation" from a vibe into a metric, and the target every onboarding flow is aimed at.
Choosing yours
The empirical route: compare retained users with vanished ones and find the early action that separates them. The event should be a value-delivering verb — created, sent, connected, published — rather than an attendance verb like viewed or clicked. If several candidates qualify, prefer the earliest one; a finish line users can reach in their first session gives your onboarding something achievable to aim at.
Examples by category
- Project management: created a board and added the first task
- Communication tools: sent the first message to a real teammate
- Analytics products: connected a data source and viewed the first live chart
- Invoicing software: sent the first invoice to a real client
Putting it to work
Once named, the event does triple duty: it defines the activation rate, it becomes the destination of the first-session guided path (a product tour that advances as the user performs the real steps), and it powers targeting — a segment of "signed up 3+ days ago, no activation event" is exactly who a recovery nudge should reach, and exactly who it can reach when the event is tracked.
One caution: revisit it yearly. Products evolve, and an activation event chosen in the seed round can quietly stop predicting retention two pivots later.
