What is a product tour?
A product tour is a guided, step-by-step walkthrough inside an application that leads users through accomplishing something real — typically a sequence of tooltips and modals anchored to actual interface elements. Good tours advance as the user performs each step themselves; weak ones narrate screenshots and get dismissed.
Interactive vs. passive
The dividing line in tour quality is who does the doing. A passive tour is a slideshow — next, next, next, done, nothing learned. An interactive tour waits for the user to actually click the real button, create the real project, send the real message; completing it is literally using the product. Interactive tours complete at dramatically higher rates for the same content, because doing sticks where reading slides off.
Anatomy of one that works
- Three to five steps ending at the activation event — momentum dies past five.
- Anchored steps — tooltips pointing at real elements, with graceful skips when an element is missing.
- Advance on real actions — the tour moves when the user clicks the actual UI, not a Next button.
- Always skippable — a tour users can't leave converts confidence into resentment.
When a tour is the wrong tool
Tours suit multi-step journeys with an obvious destination. For pointing out one feature, a single hotspot is lighter; for reference material, in-app help beats a tour that must be ridden to be consulted. And a screen so confusing it needs a permanent tour is a design bug wearing a guidance costume.
Tours are measured by completion and per-step drop-off in an onboarding funnel; modern tools build them without code on the live app.
